The
Machiguenga Indians
The Machiguenga
Indians are amongst the poorest people in the world due to terrorist activities
in the 1980's and early 1990's, professional bird trappers in the late 1990's
and illegal mahogany loggers in 2000. Peru Verde are a non profit conservation
group who are dedicated to help the Machiguenga Indians by paying them to
protect rare, exotic and endangered species such as the Emperor Tamarins and
the Blue and Gold, Blue Headed, Amazonian and Scarlet macaws that occupy the
largest clay licks in the world. Peru Verde are planning to build a schoolroom
for the Machiguenga Indian children and supply a teacher. The cost of building
a schoolroom is $10,000 and to supply a teacher for a year would cost $7,000.
Once the schoolroom and teacher are set up, the Peruvian Ministry of Education
have pledged to maintain the ongoing costs.
